OKay so i have type r speakers installed throughout my 05 civic sedan and i had just purchased a new alpine head unit. But newayz, when i went to best buy to check out any amps to power my speakers, the guy there claimed that amping my speakers would just blow them out and not benefit me at all unless i were to get a sub. Now is this true or is this guy just a deusche bag?

i have splits up front and some RF 6-1/2's in the back and they are all amped and sound pretty damn good ameped.

 

What a terrible salesman. Of course it will sound better with like a 75 to 100 watt amp behind each speaker. The difference might not be noticed though until you get to volume levels that would be uncomfortable to a lot of people (those who haven't already ruined their ears with loud music). Turning up a stock head unit past it's limit so the sound is loud but distorted is actually bad for your speakers.

Course a subwoofer would be nice too.

 

an amp for the type-r's are recommended. get an amp for them and dont go to best buy again for car audio

I agree with the salesman at one aspect. U will lose bass if you amp. It will become clearer. But you won't blow up your speakers. Its not best buy that isn't good its some of the employees. I know alot about electronics and i tryed getting a job there but they didn't want to hire me. For some reason they like hiring dumb people. Not saying that some of there employees are useless, some know what they are talking about.

 

iv'e found it's easier to blow speakers up with less power than more....when you signal gets distorted and starts clipping you might as well just plug your speaker into the wall socket cause its the same thing .....a square wave gets sent to the speaker...no good

 

There's different kinds of amps for subs and speakers as well. You'll normally use a monoblock to power subs, if you get any. And you use a 4channel (if you have 4 speakers) to power your speakers.

It's very unlikely you'll blow them, especially if you get a good amp. Most amps have a cut off point, where once you try to draw too much power into the speakers/subs it will temporarily drop the power.

You'll need to run RCAs from the head unit though, if you do get an amp. So make sure your head unit has the required RCA plugs.

 

I know exactly what the guy at best buy is talking about, this is, if my assumption is right. I am assuming you went into best buy looking to amplify your speakers to get more bass out of them, and from there he probably mentioned that you'd blow your speakers. Reason I believe this is because you said he also mentioned useless without a sub.

It is good to amplify your speakers if you really want the power from them they are rated for. Now, amplifying speakers will not last as long as speakers that are not amplified (considering that on both, you do not encounter clipping). But they will sound better. I disagree that they get less bass, this depends solely on the amplifier settings, the signal has not changed, and it depends on the amplifier. Remember that not all head units use high pass filters, and even the ones that do, are not always turned on, amplifiers meant for speakers usually have the hpf.

Make sure you run your amplifier at the rated RMS of the speaker, not peak.

 

best buy = worst price = crap sales = umm.. duhh.

I called to order a dryer the other day from a best buy, and the guy was like, Umm we can't just hold products for you, and I said, yeah but I planned on buying it with my card instantly, like right now. He was like, umm we can't do that i don't guess.

So i got online, ordered it, and did the in store pickup. I would have gone with sears but no one within 100 miles had the same dryer, ha ha.

Stupid dudes working at best buy, i tell ya. I wish I was the manager at a store, I would rake in some money, and treat people right.
