RE: amp shuts off..............
Your subs can be wired bridged in 4ohm mode, or together in a 1 ohm setup. If you could find a nice little 800watt amp thats 1 ohm stable, a mono amp, you would be providing the subs with 400 each, the top wattage, so you could probably run your gain about 3/4 power and still be giving them 300RMS each, and no fear of protection shutdown or overheating.
If you went with the 4 ohm wire up, you would want an amp that can produce at least 600RMS watts @4 ohms bridged, thus 300watts a sub, should be enough to power them still at a lower gain, and both will give you more power then your getting now, at less power expense.
If you are thinking about replacing the sony, I can try and find some quick piks for you on ebay or what not. Maybe get you headed in another direction.
It's not to say that Sony amps are bad, because I used to have one of their first generation amps, and I loved it, but when it comes to higher power and louder setups, you really want to steer towards a professional name in competition equipment. Kicker, MTX, even Fosgate will probably provide a good upgrade for the prices they offer, but you might want to order a larger amp then you need, at least by 1/4, so you can assure yourself that you have that extra power, and won't have to max your gain's out to get the sound you want.
And I would shop around, before I just ran to BestBuy or CircuitCity and purchase an amp, you can get real good deals on ebay or through online vendors, and save up to hundreds of dollars over these chain stores.

For 100-150, you can't get a ton of good picks, an excellent amp for your setup would probably run about 300. Think you could sell the sony on ebay and boost your pocket change?
And thats a good question that we haven't answered yet, how do you have your subs wired right now, if you can use paint or something to draw a little diagram it would help, maybe we can fix the wiring with what you have to get you more power, and or keep the amp from shutting off.

I still swear by either JL, Precision Power/Orion, The JL tackles your crisp detailed high performance bass needs, but straps your check book, PPI / Orion will come in pretty good, and not strap you.
I even like Alpine's sub amps.
