12" subs in the rear quarter panels?
Hi again.
I was wondering if anyone has tried mounting 12" subs, one on each side, into the spaces behind the wheel wells on an '02 Civic. It seems like a good spot for them, if there's enough room.
I'm thinking if they DO fit, it'll be a custom fiberglass job to get the two exclosures built. Any suggestions?

that is a terrible place to put them. first off if you put them in the corners there.. you cant get to your tail lights... second its gunna rattle the chit out of your quarter panels, and 3rd you're gunna have cancellation issues with 2 subs facing towards each other like that.
ive seen it done. but realistically... a simple mdf sealed or ported box will do just fine.
dont make things too complicated for yourself.

RE: 12" subs in the rear quarter panels?
Well, I really just wanted to keep as much of the trunk usable as possible. I carry a lot of gear for work in the back, and we use my car for the grocery runs and what not, so more space left available is better.
My second choice would probably be to kick out the spare and build an MDF box in the space where the spare is supposed to go. Have the subs sticking up through the spare tire cover (keep the original unharmed and copy a new one from something lightweight) and put a couple of grills on to protect them. Anyone know if this works well?

Well, I just measured and did the math, and I think I could fit 31" x 18" x 5" fairly flush with the height of the rest of the trunk, however, this only give me 0.99ft^3 for two 12's, and that doesn't count a baffle plate between them, nor does it subtract the volume taken by the cone, etc.
Starting to look like I'll have to build a box to fit right behind the seats and be damned if I need to fold the seats down for something.

just lay some tin foil in your spare tire and sling some fiberglass down there. other than being messy it's really no big deal . then cut a MDF top plate and youll have enough airspace for some 12s. using the spair tire well is one of my favorite ways to have a useable trunk . grills work pretty decent to protect the subs and you can throw the mat over them and no ones the wiser.

I'm still not sure if I can get enough volume, even if I form fit a fiberglass section to the shape of the spare tire area. I need at least 1.4cuft, and the best i could get on my calculations earlier was about 1.25, and that was setting the "material thickness" to 0".
On a related note, if i can't make it fit where I want it to, and I have to build a proper box, I'm thinking about going with a ported enclosure. Does anyone have much experience with this? I have two Alpine Type-R 12 DVC's, and I'm not sure about the tuning or anything. I've done a lot of web searches, and each and every "calculator" that I find is telling me to make a different size of box, port diam, port legnth, etc.
The Apline spec sheet says to build a 1.7cuft box (for a single 12), with a 12" x 1.25" x 22.75" port, and that will result in a tuning of 33hz.
... Or should I just go sealed again?

Do them on the sides, fairly easy to do. Make a glassed mold and a mdf sheet to cover the front, use foam to fill the gaps, sand excess and carpet. Did an install just like the other day on a customers Acura TL if you would like a pic let me know.

hey my opinion on that subject is...now im not alone. i have thought of that a while back when i first got my system. yes its a great space saving spot!. you dont need to get to your tailights all the time buy l.e.d. bulbs and dont worry bout gettin back there. buy either a dynamat extreme wedge pak or dyna liner to put in the box or pull back you carpet on the rear q pannels and stick it there.that should improve sound and take care of rattling problems. the most inexpensive place to get all of your system needs is onlinecarstereo.com they carry tons of brands and im serious bout super low prices . and have you ever considered selling your 12s and get a good pair of 10s. ive heard some 10 in subs pound harder than 12s. power acoustic FUbar subs are amazing! 200 oz magnet DVC 4ohm 1600watt peak and 600rms continious. ive seen the 10s as low as 80 a piece jus somethin to think bout
